This handwoven tapestry is based on A Composition – Sea Rhythm by Irish artist Mainie Jellett (1897–1944). After training in Paris with André Lhote and Albert Gleizes, Jellett introduced cubism and pure abstraction to Ireland. The original oil on canvas hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland (NGI.4318), bequeathed by Miss R. Kirkpatrick in 1978.
The design faithfully follows Jellett’s rhythmic arcs while being reinterpreted in the medium of woven fibre.
